Changes regarding a Sikeston-area railroad crossing, one of the last at-grade crossings in the state on a four-lane highway, will greatly improve its safety, according to Missouri Department of Transportation. The Union Pacific railroad crossing on Route 60 just west of Sikeston near Morehouse has received an exemption, allowing school buses and large vehicles carrying hazardous materials to cross the tracks without stopping. Many large trucks and buses are required by federal and state law to stop at railroad crossings, even if there's no train coming. At this location, however, the crossing is at a busy highway where few trains cross, so most other cars don't even slow down.
