Several local players named to all-region team
SIKESTON -- The 2011 Southeast Missouri All-Region football teams were announced on Wednesday by a panel of area sportswriters.
After an 8-3 season, the Sikeston Bulldogs were given six players on the first team and three on the second within the Class 4-5 category.
Bulldogs running back James Watson, offensive lineman Clayton Driskill, defensive lineman Chris Word and defensive backs Kyland Gross and Keldon Warfield made the first team.
The 6-0, 170-pound Watson led the Bulldogs with 1,605 rushing yards which notched him as the fourth best rusher in Sikeston history. He finished the season with 18 rushing touchdowns.
On top of making the first team defensive squad, Gross also made the first team offensive team as an all-purpose player. The 5-6, 145-pound junior had 653 rushing yards, 297 receiving yards and returned 11 kickoffs and six punts for a total of 323 yards. Gross ended up with 1,272 all-purpose yards and 12 total touchdowns.
Word, a 5-9, 195-pound sophomore, was fourth on the team with 64 tackles. He also had 11 tackles for a loss, two sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
The 6-2, 190-pound Flannigan led Sikeston with 99 total tackles and 13 tackles for a loss. He forced three fumbles and recovered two fumbles as well.
As a defensive back, Gross had 33 tackles and two interceptions.
Warfield, a 6-0, 180-pound senior, was third overall in tackles with 72. He also led the Bulldogs with six interceptions.
Warfield also made the second team as a wide receiver with 27 receptions for 406 yards and five touchdowns.
Offensive lineman Ben Walker and kicker Hunter Williams also made the offensive second team.
Matt Green, a 6-2, 186-pound linebacker, made the second team defense with 77 tackles, two tackles for a loss, two forced fumbles, one sack, one interception and one fumble recovery.
In Class 3, Dexter wide receiver Tyler Miller, offensive lineman Zach Lacey, offensivel lineman Brandon Moore and kicker Alex Cliff made the first team offense, while Cliff, Miller and Nick Summers made the first team defense as well.
New Madrid County Central defensive lineman D.K. Wilson made the defensive first team.
Dexter quarterback Cody Stevens made the second team offense after a season where the senior threw and ran for over 1,000 yards each.
Josh Overall, Dexter's leading rusher, made the second team offense while offensive lineman Jacob Stephens did as well.
Bearcats defensive linemen Jake Lee and Joseph Lovins made the defensive second team, as did linebacker Ryan Joyner.
The Scott City Rams were well represented in Class 2 as running back Travis Phillips, wide receivers Austin Atchley and Zach Cotner and offensive linemen Hunter Cox and Patrick Thomas made the first team offense.
Defensive lineman Heath Pobst, linebacker Brett Dirnberger and Atchley, also a defensive back, made the defensive first team.
Representing Scott City on the second team was quarterback Jonathan McFall, offensive lineman Zach Estes and linebacker Forrest Copeland.
The Charleston Bluejays had one first team selection in Krushon Scott as a defensive lineman.
Running back Jamaul Gray, offensive linemen Cole Byford and Demarcus Coleman and Scott as a punter made the offensive second team. Linebacker Kaelin Armstrong and defensive backs Gray and Mike Hull were given the honor on the defensive second team.
East Prairie punter Dalton Golightly and defensive back Shawn King made the Class 2 offensive first team. King also made the second team offense as a wide receiver.
In Class 1, Chaffee running back Tyson Estes made the first team offense as did teammates Charlie Montgomery, who plays wide receiver, and Jordan Yahn, who made it as the all-purpose player.
Chaffee offensive linemen Chris Whitaker and Dustin Worley made the second team offense while defensive lineman Worley, linebackers Trevor Cannon and Alex Davie and defensive back Zach Dannenmueller made the second team defense.
