CHARLESTON -- Federal funding will again flow into local ditches.

"They are funded again this year for the Emergency Watershed Protection program," Carlin Bennett, presiding commissioner, said during the regular Mississippi County Commission meeting Thursday.

Bennett said the county recently received a letter from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service advising funding assistance to clean out drainage ditches will again be available.

However, "there are quite a bit more restrictions as far as time," he added.

Steve Jones, commissioner, said the county has six weeks from the date of the letter to identify projects and get information including ditch cross sections to the NRCS.

"Basically, we have five weeks now," Bennett said.
