Recycle bins being misused by the public

CHARLESTON -- Recycling bins are not dumpsters -- nor are they toilets.

Carlin Bennett, presiding county commissioner, said during the regular Mississippi County Commission meeting Thursday that he was asked by Willard Adams, planner for the Bootheel Solid Waste Management District in Malden, to put the word out: Use recycling trailers as intended or lose them.

The recycling trailer in Charleston was removed three or four weeks ago, according to Bennett, "and they pulled East Prairie's as well the other day."

A significant number of people in the county that recycle, he said, and "they're asking where the bins are."

Bennett said the trailers were removed from the county because paper with what appears to be dog feces on it was found in the paper bin of the recycling trailer in Charleston.
