EAST PRAIRIE -- Alan Duane Mickel, 80, died at 6:06 p.m. June 4, 2012, at his home.

Born June 1, 1932, in McCook, Neb., to the late Hamilcar "H.T." Tellez and Doris Ida Middleton Mickel, he lived most of his life in East Prairie and taught band in Deering and East Prairie for 30 years. He served in the Air Force from 1953-1957 and was a member of the Far East Air Force Band in Tokyo. In 1960, he received a Bachelor of Music Education and was the first graduate at Arkansas State University at Jonesboro to receive a Masters of Music Education in 1963. He was vice president of Phi Mu Alpha Music Fraternal at Central Methodist in Fayette and a member of The First Baptist Church in East Prairie.

On Feb. 6, 1954, in Gideon, he married Margie Ann Owens who survives of the home.

Other survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Mike D. and Regina F. Mickel of East Prairie; one daughter, Tracey M. Mickel of East Prairie; four grandchildren, Sheila A. and Brittany Mickel, Elizabeth A. and Roger Swann and Siphal P. Chhor II; and one great-grandchild, Lucie Ann.

Visitation is after 5 p.m. Thursday at Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie, where memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday with Steven Douglas Sr. officiating.
