CAPE GIRARDEAU -- After having to postpone the opening round of the American Legion Zone 4 Tournament Thursday because of rainfall, play resumed Friday between the host team, Ford & Sons Cape Girardeau Post 63, and Festus Post 253 at Capaha Field in Cape Girardeau.

Post 63 and Festus, who is Missouri's three-time defending state champion, were tied 0-0 after three innings Thursday before the field had to be tarped during the double-elimination tournament.

During resumed play Friday, Festus broke the pitcher's duel put in play by Cape starter Alex Davie and Festus pitcher Caleb Wilkerson by coming away with a 7-3 victory which put them in the winner's bracket against Ballwin.

Ballwin defeated Festus 10-5 later Friday night.

Jackson Post 158 was defeated by Creve Coeur during the second game of the day, 6-0.

Jackson and Cape played the final game of the day at 9 p.m., but results were unavailable at press time.

The zone tournament winner advances to next week's American Legion state tournament in Sedalia, Mo. Cape is hosting the zone for the third straight year.

Festus is attempting to continue its remarkable run. Post 253 became the first American Legion baseball team since World War II to win three consecutive Missouri state titles last year. The squad advanced to the American Legion World Series in 2009.
