SIKESTON -- The Sikeston girls tennis team lost 8-1 to visiting Notre Dame Monday at Sikeston High School.

Kelsey Dial scored the only win for the Lady Bulldogs in singles play after Notre Dame decided to retire the match after Notre Dame's Carly Hopkins was ahead 2-1.

"Tough loss to Notre Dame today," Sikeston head coach Russ Dial said. "We did play well as far as everyone giving it their best effort, physically. However we could have played a better strategical match and made the score a little closer.

"That is an area of play that needs to improve before districts begin."

Notre Dame's junior varsity also scored a win, 8-3.

Sikeston will be back in action Thursday when they hit the road and travel to Kennett.

SOCCER

Sikeston 6, Saxony Lutheran 2

JACKSON -- Following three-straight games of nothing but one-goal drama, the Sikeston Bulldogs soccer team exploded offensively Monday night.

The Bulldogs upended Saxony Lutheran on the road 6-2.

"I was pleased with how we played," Sikeston head coach Doyle Noe said. "We had a few letdowns on the defensive side when we got up a few goals, but overall we played okay."

Gavin O'Brien and Brandon Goodwin put the Bulldogs ahead within the first five minutes of the match with a goal each. Chase Baron had assists in both scores.

Saxony pulled to within one before halftime in the 32nd minute.

Audi Hay opened the second half with a goal with the assist from Zach Harrison, but Saxony clawed back with their second goal seven minutes later.

Goodwin scored his second goal in the 56th minute on a pass from Tyler McClinton to put Sikeston ahead 4-2.

Adam Johnson scored the fifth goal from O'Brien and McClinton put the game out of reach with an assist from Josh Hampton.

Sikeston (7-3) travels to Anna-Jonesboro, Ill., today and will be back at home Thursday when they host Poplar Bluff in a varsity-only game at 6 p.m.
