Rams reach finals, Lady Hawks edge Chaffee

MARBLE HILL -- Led by Jesse Sanders' 24 points, the Scott City Rams advanced to the championship game of the Woodland Tournament Thursday following a 52-43 win over Oak Ridge.

The Blue Jays trailed by just four points after three quarters, but the Rams kept them at bay to hold on for the win. Scott City led 20-7 after the first quarter.

Jonathan McFall scored 16 points for the Rams, who had just four scorers all night.

Scott City (2-0) will play Leopold, who defeated Perryville 66-30, for the tournament championship tonight.

Sikeston 52, Poplar Bluff 43

SIKESTON -- After a strong start, the Sikeston ninth grade basketball team defeated Poplar Bluff 52-43 Thursday.

Sikeston jumped out to a 17-2 lead after the first quarter and led 29-14 at the half.

Dominique Dyes led the Bulldogs with 17 points. Jaylen Mallory added nine points while Cedric McIntyre chipped in eight.

Sikeston's next game will be Monday when host Cape Central at 6 p.m.

Poplar Bluff 48, Sikeston 47 OT

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston seventh grade boys basketball team lost an overtime thriller to Poplar Bluff Thursday night 48-47.

Although they were down by 13 in the second quarter, the Bulldogs bounced back to make it a close game throughout.

In fact, a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Sikeston's Sam Cox tied the game at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime.

Sikeston (1-3) was outscored 4-3 in the extra quarter, but didn't go with two different chances at taking a lead at the end.

"We got down but we battled back," Sikeston coach Derek James said. "They shown a lot of heart. I'm really proud of the boys for not quitting and refusing to lose."

Cox and Phayzun Fobbs led the Bulldogs with 15 points apiece.

Sikeston's next game will be on Tuesday when both the seventh and eighth grade travel to Charleston.

CHAFFEE -- The Kelly Lady Hawks edged the Chaffee Lady Devils 64-58 Thursday night at Chaffee High School.

Tessa Johnson led the Lady Hawks (1-0) with 19 points while Stephanie Worth, Tori Duenne and Logan Ivie all chipped in with nine points.

Chaffee (1-2) was paced by Liz Sexton who scored a team high 13 points. Ellie Sigman and Adrienne Eichhorn each posted 10 points in the loss.

Charleston 85, Scott City 65

SCOTT CITY -- Behind two 20-point scores, the Charleston Lady Bluejays (2-1) took care of the Scott City Lady Rams Thursday 85-65.

Dazique Gillespie led the Lady Bluejays with 24 points while teammate E'Neikqua Ewing poured in 22.

Charleston sped out to a 10-point lead after the first quarter and held a 43-24 advantage at halftime.

Scott City's Abbie McAlister scored a game-high 28 points in the loss.

Charleston will host Hayti Monday at 6 p.m.

Scott City (1-1) will participate in the Lady Devils Classic starting Monday at Chaffee High School.
